At the pub after fencing tonight, my friend and I were talking about the history of medical science and how they had finally worked out about airborne transmission of disease, and she said that it was guinea pigs.  I mean everyone probably knows the saying about “don’t use me as a guinea pig!’, but you don’t often think about the origin of the phrase. And I looked at her and she said "they had this chibi ward with guinea pigs and they sent the air through there" And my brain said "well that makes perfect sense - of course it would be a chibi ward with guinea pigs because they're small and cute" Then my brain rewound a bit and went "Oh... TB, not chibi..." On the plus side, can confirm it's legitimate to go to the chi sound for the ti hiragana sound... on the downside, learning Japanese appears to have affected my ears and how I hear sounds...  I’m in pain after standing for an hour & a half to prep dinner.  I just finally sat down & took a pain killer with a sip of most excellent ume-shu (薬を飲んだ) & I think it must be the quality of this 梅酒, not like the usual one, but I then had a sudden realization that it was the same ending in ume-shu as it is in nihonshu…  And felt like a genius and stupid for it taking so long to realise, both at the same time… Random cat tax…

 Yesterday, I once again changed my phone into Japanese language mode (having just watched a couple of episodes of pretty princess precure with some friends, my brain just autocompleted/echoed “modo eleganto!” there… 🤦).  I wanted to switch back to google maps in Japanese and the only way to do that on iPhone is to switch the whole OS to Japanese… I may have answered a question in that process differently than last time because everything is in Japanese now, including all the save menus etc. I don’t recall that from last time lol. Or wwww. And I have been navigating things from memory of menus and picking up meaning from context (or a few places where I actually know the word AND the kanji (that pairing is suddenly really important lol), like 写真), but that doesn’t help with vocabulary gaining, so I’ve actually been starting to screenshot thing’s and bounce them over to Google translate so that I can grab the Kanji and drop them into shirabe jisho and actually learn them…....

Me, on Friday, heating half of my leftovers for lunch:  And if I’m really efficient, I can have the other half for lunch before I go to the radio station on … Me: (pauses, because I was going to say “on Saturday”, but my brain wants to say tomorrow instead for some reason*) Me: (realizing that I can’t say “on tomorrow” because it doesn’t work in English) Me: (thinking it’s the same in Japanese because you can’t use にwith fuzzy time…) Oh!!! It’s the same, it’s the same!!!!! 

 I was playing a game on my tablet and I found that I already had the last of the five items I needed to level up… and when I saw it and as I dragged it across to merge it, my brain was going “あー、かんぺき！” And I thought “really brain?  That means perfect?  You’re just making things up now!” So I went and checked it in the dictionary and I owe my brain an apology 😳 I had a similar thing happen the other day with a crossword clue - I had just binged about 6 episodes of anime before deciding to do the crossword puzzle and the clue was “sufficient, nice, fine, pretty, quite” and my brain instantly said “けっこう” which I thought was highly implausible as I would have sworn we had never had it as a vocabulary word - despite all those hiragana (& more) being available in the answer candidate pool for the app.  But I entered it in anyway, and it was right…then realized that I had heard the word multiple times in the anime episodes that I had just binged and my brain must have...

ホムステイファミリの娘は作る贈り物 今日は、荷物出来た、全部で学生とバンドル先生アメリカに帰りました。中田先生はご家族に行きました。私だけ東京にいました。悲しかったが六本木で花とゆめざしの美術展に行きました。ざしは、五十歳です。たくさん美しいマンガの絵を見ました。 旅行の好きなことは、難しく選びます！ ホムステイや、たくさん神社とお寺に行くのや、茶道や、カラオケや、会社訪問が好きでした。日本の文化が見えました。 留学生旅行のでホムステイと会社訪問が出来ました。人々の日々の生活がけいけん出来ました。 会社訪問は面白買ったが、ホムステイは一番好きです。

今日は、チームラボ会社訪問でした。美術館の理由は、会社員が説明をしてくれたんです。面白かったんです。 そして、渋谷に行きました。 午後から、渋谷でたくさん買っていました。mos burgersでなつみえびかつを食べました。疲れたのでホテルに戻りました。 二日間後で、私は、一人で、明治新宮に行きました。6月なので、菖蒲庭が行けました。皇后の釣り堀も見ました。百合と鶴が見えました。とてもきれいでした。神社は、みつの楠があります。美し買ったんですが、二つは、一緒に、結婚でした。全部できれいで静かで美し買ったんです。行った私、本当に嬉しくなりましたんです。 ーーー There’s a poem that says something like “I think that I have never seen a poem half as lovely as a tree”, and the gardens and the plants and the many, many, trees at the Meiji Shrine are far more beautiful than the Team Labs art exhibits could ever be. 今日は、鎌倉市の日帰り旅行でした。鎌倉のヴォラんチアガイドは、優しくて鎌倉の歴史に詳しかったんです。神社に一つ、お寺に二つ行きました。段葛で歩いて鶴岡八幡宮に行きました。神社です。 鶴岡八幡宮の庭の池は、ご家族の力が見えました。 鯉や亀や鳶を見ました。鯉の餌を買って、たくさん鳩を飼ったんです。 それから、鎌倉市の伝統的な昼ご飯を食べました。ワイトバイットと鮭を食べました。 昼ご飯の後で、高徳院に行きました。鎌倉の大仏のお寺です。大仏の中に行けます！面白かったんです！ そして、バスで長谷寺に行きました。お寺はみつです。庭は、きれいでした。お寺の上に海が見えました！海が大好きです。 そして、海に歩いて海べで遊んで。海で歩いたんです。 さいごに、買い物して浴衣を書いて東京に戻りました。

  今日は、Team Lab Planetsの美術館に行きました。所が二つあってお水と庭です。写真を撮っては良買ったんです。 とりあえず、靴を脱ぎます。暗い水で歩いていた。それから、明るい滝に来た。そして、“ヲブロルーム“に歩いた。それは、好きじゃないんでした。 次に、部屋のLEDの滝はきれいで好きでした。そして、部屋の鯉でした。少し暗い部屋の水。明るい鯉の光泳いでいたんです。多いい部屋のテクノアートでした。 そして、MERCARIの会社の見学に行きました。本当に、教育的で面白かったんです。そして、HALの大学の見学に行きました。本当に、かっこよくて教育的で面白かったんです。 疲れたのでホテルに戻りました。

今日、ホムステイファミリーは行かなければならないんです。悲しかったです。私に別れを告げるために、ご家族は休んだ。千葉から東新宿ホテルまで、遠いです。半分くらい、車で、全部で運転しました。東京Disneyレゾーと見えました。ちょっと交通渋滞でしたが、さいごに駅に着いた。本当に悲しかったんです。 新しいホテルに早い来ました。十二時によこはまに行きました。忙しかった午後は、よかったです。たくさん大学生と先生は、カラオケで歌ってた。楽しかったんです！ そして、友達とcosmo clockに乗りました。少し雨のに景色は、きれいでした。 さいごに、スターバーで飲み物を買ってホテルに戻りました。

  今日は、最終の日のホムステイでした。短い時間が悲しいです。ご家族が好きです。 今朝、お父さんは、四時間に野球練習にお兄ちゃんを連れったんです。長い！お母さんとお姉ちゃんと赤ちゃんと朝ご飯を食べて100円店に歩いて買い物してスパーで買って家に帰りました。色々なことを話した。 お父さんとお兄ちゃん帰ったら昼ご飯を食べました。後から、全部で車でお菓子に行きました。お菓子屋で、色々のお菓子を買いました。味は、寒天や餡子や抹茶でした。どら焼きと水羊羹があります。全部、とてもきれいでした。おいしそう！ 本当に、おいしかったんです！ 子供は友達と遊んでいました。それから、お母さんは晩ご飯を使いました。鶏肉やご飯やサラダやのりじゃがいもでした。それもおいしかったんです。 晩ご飯の後、娘はプレセンとを使って*私にくれました。とても優しくてかわいいでした！ I will be sad to go tomorrow. * she had been making it for longer than that, I just learned about it after dinner, when I was given the gift.

千葉のホムステイです．今日は、二年生のスポーツデイです．面白くて楽しいです． 小学校のスポーツデイは、イギリスと日本の違いについて話していました．イギリスでは、足の三つ競争があります。イギリスも、猫車競争がありますが近い小学校は草がない、砂だけので手が痛ければんです。 太鼓を叩きながら、一年生は継走をした。 そして、二年生は学級の競争があります。白い学級と赤い学級は、ネットに球を放りました。赤いチームは勝ったんです。ホムステイの息子は、赤いチームでした。 そして、一年生は、踊りました。それから、二年生は踊りました。さいごに、太鼓を叩きながら、二年生は継走をし勝ったチームは、知らないんですけど。 学校は、たくさん植木鉢に入れる草木があります。小さい池は、亀が七匹泳いでいました。子供は亀に草をやって、全部で、家に帰りました。 少し日焼けするんですけどひどくないんです。 今夜、鮨やで晩ご飯を食べました。まぐろしサルモンしイクラを食べました。メロンシェベットを食べました。美味しかったんです！ Additional notes: The difference between class and real life… Class always ショアーを浴びる、お風呂に入る Real life ショアーを入る Also there are words that I recognize on hearing that I couldn’t for the life of me drag out of my memory to speak… like the mother said that the father would come and pick us up and that was in the vocabulary of the favours chapter in intermediate 2, but I couldn’t tell you it. 新宿のゴジラとぼっちざろっく 今日は、そてつフレサきんしちょホテルで出ました．全部荷物とお美林大学の新宿キャンパスに行きました．buddiesと会いました．大学食堂で昼ごはんを食べました．そして、新宿に散歩しました．今日は、一番暑かったんです．蒸し暑いでした． お美林大学に戻ってたくさんアイスを食べました． そして、ホムステイファミリーと会って家に来ました．

今日は、美術館に行きました．葛飾北斎の絵でした．浮世絵の変化は、良い説明です． そして、築地に昼ご飯を食べました. うなぎとほたてとわぎゅとうにとイクラを食べて見ました．うなぎとほたてとわぎゅ、全部で、焼肉で美味しかったです．うにとイクラは、ままでした． そして、あきはばらに行きました．おたくparadiseです！ 先生は二人、学生は、九人、全部で十一人、マイドカフェに行きました． 学生は、マイドに騙させられたんですけど先生は助けてもらいました！先生は頭が良いしやさしいし． そして、すみだ水族館に行きました．とても面白いね．からげや色々魚やたくさんペンギンを見ました．とてもかわいい！ 後で晩ご飯を食べてもっと買い物して心が疲れた学生は、ホテルに戻りました． —— I think, for me, the most interesting things at the art musuem were learning that one colour art, ukiyo-e, became nishiki-e and became polychrome but still tended to be referred to as ukiyo-e, and about the making process, and the number of people involved and comparing that to what I already knew about western woodblock printing and print engraving.
